Marbling is a monoprinting technique, the first records of marbling date back to the 12th century, in the form of Suminagashi, a technique practiced by monks in Japan. It involves suspending inks in water to create intricate patterns. Today, marbling has made its way into various media besides paper, such as ceramics, wood, and fabrics. However, it remains an endangered craft, as ranked by the Heritage Crafts Association, and very few full-time marble workers still practice it.
